M4A (MPEG-4 Part 14)

M4A is Apple’s modification of MPEG-4 (MP4) media container containing audio files. Since the original media container could contain various data — video, audio, and others — Apple created its own extensions that would allow users to distinguish exactly what content is inside the file. Accordingly, the letter A at the end of the .m4a extension stands for Audio.

Such a container may contain files in AAC or ALAC formats - file formats with both lossy and lossless.

Technically, the extension can be easily renamed to .mp4, and then it can be used as a simple MP4 file. However, if you need to use such a file as regular audio, the easiest way is to extract its contents and convert it to MP3.

MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer III)

The MP3 format is known among a large number of people. It was with the advent of this format that the new era of the music industry began to flourish, and MP3 players became a household name for any compact music player, even if they used other file formats.

The need for the emergence of such a format was due to the small amount of memory on the devices that were used to store music - first compact discs (CD), and later flash memory, which at that time was still expensive and did not greatly exceed the capacity of the discs.

New methods used in MP3 have made it possible to reduce the size of a single music file from about 40-50 MB to 4-5 MB - almost 10 times. At the same time, the sound quality remained almost unchanged. Despite the development of technology, the format is still popular.
